The trip to Amsterdam was a very good one, especially since we took the car with friends T and K. I planned a list of Korean songs for both of them, and the result was quite interesting. They both liked Miss A, thought Girls’ Generation was a little too cute and too pretty to listen to and pointed out that Korean sounded a lot like English, more than Chinese and Japanese. I think it’s because the way singers pronounce the Korean words, just to make it sound “cooler” and also to make the rhymes work.
암스테르담에 친구 두명 T (남)와 K (여)와 함께 넷이서 차를 타고 다녀왔다. 다섯시간반정도 걸리는 거리라서 난 특별히 K-Pop을 따로 준비. 아무래도 언어가 다르다보니 몇가지 소개?했지만 결과는 흥미로웠다: 둘다 미스에이 노래들을 좋아했고 소녀시대는 너무 간지럽다고 이야기함. 의외로 일본어와 중국어보다 한국어가 영어랑 비슷하다고 얘기했는데 이건 아무래도 많은 가수들이 멋?을 낸답시고 한국어를 영어처럼 발음해서가 아닐까라고 생각. 예를 들면 “나를 보고-오우,” “아닌뒈에-” 식의 발음들. 그리고 잘 들어보면 가요에 영어가 엄청 들어간다. 베이비, 러브, 섹시 등등.
It’s impossible not to take photos of the famous canal and buildings around the city of Amsterdam, and that’s exactly what I did. Except I just took too much of them, so had to cut down to a more decent number. How about 22.
The hotel we were staying at was about 40 minutes away from the center, which was both irritating and refreshing. It was frustrating because it just took so long to get to the city center, which is where basically everything is located, and refreshing because we could actually look into the real lives of Amsterdamers. For example, there was this building (seen above) next to a park and it had a little balcony and mini dock for small boats and yachts. So they basically get up in the morning, get dressed, eat breakfast, walk down that little dock and sail away to work. VERY cool.
조금 늦게 호텔을 예약하는 바람에 중심가에서 트램을 타고 40분정도 걸리는 곳에서 지냈는데 재밌는건 이곳 몇몇 아파트들은 저렇게 수로와 연결되어 있어서 집에서 바로 계단으로 내려와 작은 요트나 배를 타고 다닐 수 있다. 대신 물이 너무 더럽고 오리들이 너무 많아서 수영은 못할것 같아서 약간 아쉬웠음.
I have to say most of the buildings outside of the center were pretty modern. Of course, as soon as you get nearer to the center, you find the colorful houses with pointy roofs lined up throughout the neighborhood.
Although the houses look similar, they are the result of a very rich (and very complicating) history of various architectural styles. First came the Gothic, then in the 16th century came the Renaissance, which quickly developed into Amsterdam’s own Renaissance style. In the 17th century there was the baroque style, which gave way to the French style in the 18th century. Then came the neo-gothic, and then the Art Nouveau and finally Art Deco. They either just couldn’t make up their minds or were fascinated by new styles. Either way, it turned out to be something very interesting. And very profitable in terms of tourism.
암스테르담 중심가의 건물들의 건축양식은 그 역사가 대단. 고딕으로 시작했다가 16세기에는 르네상스로, 그리고 여기서 암스테르담만의 르네상스식으로 발전했고 그 이후에는 바로크식, 그리고는 프랑스의 영향을 받고 네오고딕으로 갔다가 아르누보 그리고 마지막으로 아르데코로 발전. 거리를 걷거나 사람들과 얘기를 하면서 문화가 굉장히 오픈되어있다고 생각했는데 건축양식도 역시나 같은 맥락이었던 듯. 그래서인지 똑같이 생긴 건물들이 거의 없다.
Speaking of tourism, it’s officially illegal to purchase marijuana in the Netherlands. However, in 1976 the Dutch parliament did decriminalize possession of less than five grams of cannabis, yet banned smoking in public spaces. So whenever we would walk through a bar or a “cafe,” not only could we see signs saying “You can ‘SMOKE’ here,” but we also had to turn our heads away from the very earthy scent of cannabis and magic mushrooms. (None of us smoked anything, fyi since so many of my friends asked.)
네덜란드에서의 마리화나 등의 “마약” 판매는 공식적으로는 불법. 하지만 5그램 정도의 적은 양의 마리화나는 허용하고 있는 대신에 공공장소에서는 사용할 수 없게 되어있다. 카페나 바를 지나치다보면 앞에 “여기서 피울 수 있어요!”라고 주어 생략하고 씌어있는데 이곳에서 사서 피울 수 있는것. (우린 다 겁이 많아서 안피고 구경만 했음. 담배 연기랑은 너무 달라서 차이를 한번에 확! 느낄 수 있다.)
Prostitution is also legal, but some German cities also have legal prostitution. I felt like I was walking into a documentary about legal prostitution. It’s THAT real: peeking in, luring customers, the red lights, the curtains, the giggling guys, all right in front of your face. We had a lengthy discussion about prostitution over Dutch beers but, as expected, weren’t able to come down to a clean conclusion. For me, prostitution can never be a good thing, but if it’s happening, better to be safe for both parties through regulations and legal protection. On a side note, the situation on both drugs and prostitution may change, according to reports.
성매매도 합법인데 사실 독일도 성매매는 합법이다. 의외로 합법인 나라가 많다. 다만 암스레트담에서는 아예 관광 상품으로 재탄생?시켜서 쇼윈도처럼 만들어놓았다는 것. 그 구역에 들어서면 뭔가 성매매와 관련된 다큐멘터리에 바로 걸어들어간 느낌. 분위기가 뭔가 어수선해지고 눈을 어디다가 둬야할지 모르는 상황 발생. 관광객들은 들여다보고 언니…들은 춤추거나 앞에 있는 유리를 톡톡 두들긴다거나 하고, 누가 들어가면 바로 커텐이 가려지고, 이 모든 상황이 눈앞에서 바로 휙휙 펼쳐지니까 불편하면서도 신기한 느낌. 그렇다고 계속 앉거나 서서 구경할 수도 없는 노릇이고 계속 직진을 하거나 옆 골목으로 걸어가는 정도인데 그 구역을 벗어나지 않는 이상 같은 상황 반복. 우리 모두 너무 놀랐던 순간은 커플이 언니와 가격 흥정을 하고 있었던 장면. 뭐라고 말은 못하고 눈만 동그랗게 뜨고 서로를 쳐다봄. (같이 간 친구들은 둘다 독일인이었는데 나못지 않게 놀라워하는 눈치)
맥주를 마시며 성매매에 대한 열띤 토론 중 내린 결론: “성매매는 어떤 상황에서도 올바르다고 볼 수 없지만 있어야하는 경우라면 제대로된 안전, 법적 보호가 있어야한다.”
Correct me if I’m wrong, but there really isn’t anything that you can call a Dutch cuisine. Cheese, haring and poffertjes may be considered as Dutch, but as a cuisine it was hard to find. Which is why there are various international cuisines lined up street after street. Chinese, Thai, Argentinean, Turkish and even Korean. Some cuisines even had their own designated street. In fact, Amsterdam has one of the biggest Chinatowns in central Europe.
적어도 내가 경험한 암스테르담에는 네덜란드만의 음식 문화가 없었다. 유럽에서도 제일 크기로 유명한 차이나타운이 있고 태국, 터키, 그리스, 아르헨티나 등 각 나라 음식 거리가 있어서 고르기는 편하고 좋았다. 해봤자 치즈, 헤링, 디저트류 정도. 그래서 우린 3일동안 태국음식, 아르헨티나 스테이크 그리고 다양한 길거리 간식거리를 먹었음.
There are two types of canal boats rides: one starts from one point, circles around the major areas and comes back to the starting point. You can’t get off and it takes about an hour. Another one offers hop offs, so you buy a ticket and you can get on and get off as much as you like to your destination. Either way, the boat ride is a must.
수로를 즐길 수 있는 방법 중 하나는 보트를 타는건데 두가지가 있다. 하나는 버스처럼 정거장이 있어서 탔다가 내렸다가 하는 방식, 그리고 다른 하나는 한시간정도 쭉 보트 투어하는 방식. 우리는 암스테르담 카드를 사서 두번째 투어가 포함되어 있어서 탔는데 수로가 있는 도시 (암스테르담, 스트라스부르크 등)에서는 이런 보트를 한번씩 타주는게 여행의 묘미(이자 잠시 앉아서 정신을 가다듬을 수 있어서 좋음).
We took the first option and putting aside the lovely canal, houses and the information coming out of the speaker in Dutch, German and English, it was so great to sit down and enjoy the view. It was raining when we were walking around the first day, so it was nice and cozy and SOMEONE may have even fallen asleep during the ride.
This is creepy, but I once mentioned that whenever I go to a different city, I tend to (closely) examine the houses, windows, decorations and yes, sometimes even the insides. It’s not like I try to jump up to see the interior or wait for someone to open the curtains or anything. But in Amsterdam, this habit of mine took a turn. To both a better and perhaps a creepier side. Amsterdam houses or people were so open. The curtains would be completely open, so I would peek inside while I’m walking pass it, thinking it’s a cafe or a gallery (this part is important), but then realize it’s someone’s house. Most houses also have very big windows so this also works, or worsens, the creepy factor.
걸어다니면서 신기했던것 중 또 하나는 개인 집들이 무슨 박물관이나 가게처럼 안이 훤히 다 들여다보인다는 것. 가게인줄 알고 들여다보았다가 하품하고 들어오는 아이들과 부모들이 아침먹으러 부엌으로 들어오는 모습을 보고 놀라서 기절할뻔. 1층인데 아무렇지 않게 커텐도 안치고 그냥 있는 그대로를 다 보여주고 있는 상황인데 신기하면서도 내가 오히려 어색.
The streets. Imagine: There’s a ship sailing. People on board are feeding the seagulls. The seagulls are flying up and down, trying to catch as much feed as possible. Meanwhile, dolphins are swimming alongside the ship, jumping and picking up speed. And you are right in the middle of everything. Trams, taxis, buses, cars, bikes, motorbikes and people all thrown into the street. Interestingly enough, I never witnessed an accident during they stay. (There are bike lanes but I saw more than once the bikes just swooshing through) Not even a pigeon got hurt in this mess.
자전거하면 또 빼놓을 수 없는 곳. 비가 자주 와서 우리는 자전거를 안탔지만 길거리 한복판에 있는 느낌을 설명하라면: 출렁이는 바다위에 배가 있는데 그 주위에 돌고래들이 경쟁한다고 속력을 내며 헤엄치고 그 배 위에서 사람들이 시끄럽게 우는 갈매기들한테 먹이를 던져주고, 갈매기들은 받아먹겠다고 위 아래로 빠르게 날고 소리내고. 이런 상황 한가운데에 서 있는 느낌. 길거리에 차, 버스, 트램, 자전거, 오토바이, 관광객, 비둘기 다 한꺼번에 움직이고 속력을 내고 있는 상황. 입을 계속 벌린 상태로 앞뒤 옆을 두리번거리면서 한발자국씩 내딛었다. 사고가 안나는게 신기한 정도.
