Barcelona: La Sagrada Família

La Sagrada Família is a Roman Catholic church in Barcelona and was firstly designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. (He’s everywhere!) The construction of the church, which started in 1882, is still in progress and is scheduled to complete in 2026. We still have 12 years left. It’s taking so long because the construction relied (and still is) on private donations. It was also interrupted by the Spanish Civil War in 1936, but donations and wars aside, the overall design and concept does seem it needs time and effort. The columns, the sculptures, the interior, the glass windows.

사그라다 파밀리아는 바르셀로나의 대표적인 관광지이자 세계에서 가장 유명한 카톨릭 성당중 하나. 구엘공원을 건축한 안토니 가우디의 작품으로 아직까지 짓고 있는 중. 1882년에 공사 시작, 공식적으로는 2026년에 완공된다고 하니 아직 12년이나 남은 셈. 공사 자체가 기부금으로 이루어지고 있고 1936년에는 스페인 내전으로 뒤쳐졌기 때문에 늦어졌다고 나와있지만 사실 성당 자체가 한번에 휙 만들어내기 힘든 구조라고 생각. 창문이며 계단이며 석조 장식이며 손이 안가는 부분이 하나도 없게 디자인한 가우디.

The style of the cathedral is close to Spanish Late Gothic, Catalan Modernism and Art Nouveau, the last being the speciality of Gaudí. There’s clearly two distinct styles in the exterior: one which is by Gaudí himself (very detailed, intricate, real and even emotional) and another by Josep Maria Subirachs, who continued Gaudí’s work but kept his own style rather than imitating the former artist. Subirachs’ style tend to be a bit more modern, simple, rough and even a bit abstract. The famed Catalan architect actually passed away April 6, 2014.

공사중에 가우디가 세상을 떠났기 때문에 외적인 면에서는 대표적으로 가우디식의 디자인과 가우디의 뒤를 이어받은 건축가이자 조각가 수비라치의 디자인으로 나눌 수 있다. 아르누보의 양식을 띈 가우디의 작품들은 섬세하고 로맨틱한 표현, 세심한 디테일에 신경을 쓴 반면 수비라치는 차가울 정도로 매끈하고 각이 선 느낌을 중시. (수비라치 또한 가우디와 마찬가지로 성당의 완공을 지겨보지 못하고 얼마전 4월 6일에 타계했다.) 현재 전체적인 공사 총책임자이자 건축가는 요르디 보넷.

After taking about 100 photos outside, we went inside. Slowly. It’s quite dark for a cathedral but then you can see rays of lights peeping through the glass windows like a forrest. Gaudí was the master of nature, and not only did he understand the art, science and shapes of the natural environment, but he managed to add these elements to his own works. Easier said than done. The columns were made to resemble tree trunks, while some decorations and glass windows resemble a type of plant or flower.

There’s actually a small museum inside the cathedral that explains and demonstrates Gaudí’s work, and it’s easy to say that almost all of his creations were based on some type of tree, animal, plant or natural phenomenon.

가우디의 거의 모든 작품들은 자연현상이나 동물, 또는 식물의 모습을 본떠 만들었다. 성당도 예외는 아니라서 기둥들은 나무를 본떠 숲속에 와있는 듯한 이미지를 만들어냈고 창문이나 계단 등 작은 부분 하나까지도 식물의 가지나 뿌리 등을 형상화했다고. 성당은 사실 들어오면 고요하기 마련인데 사그라다 파밀리아는 나무와 숲속의 이미지가 크게 다가와서 그런가, 아늑한 분위기마저 든다.

These ladies were Korean. Koreans and our smart phones. Can’t live without ’em. On a side note, it’s interesting to listen to tour guides whenever I’m walking around important tourist areas. I understand English and Korean, obviously, and now can also understand German about 70 percent. I sometimes ask G for the Italian/Spanish guides. It’s both funny and interesting how they talk about different things. Spanish (again, I had G eavesdrop…) guides tend to know a lot about personal facts and how it shaped the artist, the artwork etc, while German guides tend to stick to the facts: a lot of dates, numbers, historical records, etc.

Koreans talk about everything, and are not afraid to add in their own opinions. For instance, when we were visiting the Picasso museum, this Korean tour guide was explaining that she personally didn’t understand the significance of SOME works by Picasso. “I think some works are considered as masterpieces because they were drawn by P. No more, no less. If I saw it somewhere else, I wouldn’t feel anything.” Hmm. Good to know, miss. (Italians seem to be a mixture of Spanish and German.)

역시나 최첨단의 한국 어머님들. 자랑스러운 한국인이여. 요새는 사실 스마트폰도 사진이 너무 잘나와서 무겁게 따로 카메라를 가지고 다니지 않아도 되는 정도. 어머님, 아버님들, 설명을 들으시면서 열심히 사진을 찍으시고 또 휘리릭 사라지심.

따로 가이드를 고용해서 투어를 다닐 수도 있는데 우린 사실 번거롭기도 하고 해서 따로 안하고 (부끄럽게도) 가끔 만나게 되는 한국어 가이드, 이탈리아어/스페인어가이드, 영어 가이드, 독일어 가이드를 만나면 살짝 귀를 쫑긋하고 감사히 (몰래) 듣기도… 재밌는건 국가별 가이드마다 설명하는 주제가 약간 다르다는 것. 피카소의 경우 스페인어 가이드는 피카소의 인생, 특히 여자관계에 대해서 굉장히 구체적으로 열심히 설명을 했는데 어느 한국어 가이드님은 “피카소 정도 되니까 이렇게 그려도 되는거 같아요, 이거 솔직히 딱 보자마자 감동이 오세요? 피카소니까 이렇게 그려도 다 작품인거겠죠” 너무 본인 생각을 여과없이 솔직하고 설명하셔서 놀람.

A group of architects and artists were working on a model of the Sagrada Família and even though it was a miniature version, it looked as complicated and intricate as the real version.
