Giovinazzo: By the port

2Giovinazzo isn’t really a tourist area. It’s a small village with a lot of cats, not so much hotels or B&Bs, a few popular cafes, gelaterias, pastry shops and bakeries and a very pretty view of the sea. This also means there are not a lot of tourists, and thus, not so many Asians. This made me a bit uncomfortable at first because there can be a lot of staring. Not the shy, looking away yet still looking in the corner of the eye-type of way, but the looking straight into the eye and then stopping tracks and looking again, regardless of age and gender. Not that this is wrong, just a wee bit awkward on my side. Now I’m quite used to it now (and I’m hoping the people of Giovinazzo will also get used to me) and try to say ciao whenever I have the chance, mostly to little kids.

I love that each family seem to have a bakery, cafe and cheese place they prefer going to. Also the fact that everyone seems to know a member of (almost) every other family. Something like, “Who was that?” “Oh, he’s the uncle of my friend’s cousin.” “…Oh. And how do you him?” “My aunt used to go to his wife’s shop.” “Oh. Well, THAT explains everything.”
